Proposed new micropub in Peebles hoping to get green light

The Borders could soon have a new micropub if plans for the conversion of a former gift shop in Peebles gets the go ahead.

Mark Harrison has submitted an application to Scottish Borders Council for the change of use of Carol’s Creations at 42a Northgate into a new watering hole.

The plan is to close the current premises in a bid to bring new life to the town’s high street. The focus would be to encourage a convivial, friendly atmosphere, more akin to a gathering than a pub. The venue would focus on a small range of craft ales and craft spirits.

Mr Harrison said: “Our intention is to turn the shop into a micropub, with the focus being on providing a place for people who appreciate good quality ales and spirits. We intend to source all the ales and spirits from local microbreweries and distilleries, with the odd exception of sourcing some guest ales from south of the border and from up in the Highlands.

“We want to provide a relaxing atmosphere where people can get together for a few quality drinks and a bit of banter in a peaceful setting. There will be no music, television, or any gambling machines. Our aim is not to provide another pub in Peebles but an alternative to what is already in the town.”

The application has generated one objection from Julie Bond, who lives opposite the premises, who said: “Peebles has a sufficient number of public houses and I really don’t think we need another. Smokers gather outside and the general comings and goings of a public house can be very disruptive to residents of which there are many in the Northgate area.
